Program Structure
The one-year Obesity Medicine Fellowship is a multidisciplinary collaboration between LSU Health-New Orleans School of Medicine, Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
Clinical training as well as research activities will take place primarily at Metamor Institute on the Pennington Biomedical campus in Baton Rouge under the direction of Dr. Robert Dubin, associate professor-research in clinical science.
The fellow will develop clinical expertise in obesity medicine with a focus on the evaluation and management of the patient with obesity and comorbidities. It also includes training in the pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing metabolic surgery. Fellows who have completed the program will be eligible to qualify for the ABOM Certification Examination at the completion of their fellowship.
The core elements of the Obesity Medicine Fellowship Program curriculum include:
- Adult medical obesity therapy
- Pediatric medical obesity therapy
- Lifestyle-based obesity therapy
- Surgical obesity therapy
- Didactic curriculum on the science and clinical aspects of obesity
The Obesity Medicine Fellowship Program curriculum consists of more than 50 percent clinical obesity medicine training and teaching.
