Interests: Dr. Pan's laboratory focuses on the regulation of cytokine transport across the blood-brain and blood-spinal cord barrier (BBB). At the cell biology level, we address the mechanisms of endocytosis and intracellular trafficking of peptides and proteins that lead to transcytosis across cerebral endothelial cells composing the BBB. This will help us to understand how the BBB regulates the crosstalk between the periphery and the central nervous system by providing a communicating interface. In pathological states including spinal cord and brain injury, cerebral ischemia, and autoimmune diseases, we will be studying how cytokine transport has changed, what the functional implications are, and how we can take advantage of the huge regulatory interface of BBB to facilitate neuroregeneration. |
