Research Interests:

Dr. Cefalu's research is active at both the clinical and basic levels. On a clinical level, he is interested in clinical interventions to improve the metabolic state of individuals with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Such interventions have included novel delivery systems for insulin and nutritional modulations. The nutritional approaches include caloric restriction, chromium supplementation, and novel botanical extracts. The clinical research techniques employed include the use of the hyperglycemic euglycemic clamp. As part of the clinical research, biopsies are taken for analysis in the laboratory. In the Lab, his interests are primarily in the area of insulin resistance and the study of the potential mechanisms. His is currently in the first year of a 4 year research project from the NIH which will examine the clinical effect of Chromium on insulin action in Type 2 diabetes, and his lab will explore potential mechanisms of action. He also is in the last year of an award from the American Diabetes Association assessing the clinical effect of chromium supplementation on glycemia in type 2 diabetes. Several clinical projects are ongoing including the effect of an extract of tarralin on glucose control in type 2 diabetes, and the use of inhaled insulin.
