Study Purpose

When diet and exercise are not enough to achieve weight management goals, oftentimes a medication is recommended to achieve necessary weight loss.

The STEP 8 research study will assess the safety and effectiveness of a study drug for weight management purposes.

About the Study

The study consists of 16 total visits to the Pennington Biomedical outpatient clinic and 7 phone calls with the study staff. Eligible participants will receive either the study drug, an already approved medication or a placebo for 68 weeks.

Study Design

Number of Visits:

  • 1 screening visit
  • 15 study visits
  • 7 phone calls

Procedures:

  • Medical history
  • Height and weight
  • Waist measurements
  • Vital signs (pulse and blood pressure)
  • Physical exam
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine heart health
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Blood tests
  • Diet and activity counseling
  • Questionnaires

Study Qualifications

To qualify for this research study, participants should:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a BMI of 30 or above calculate your BMI
    • OR have a BMI of 27 or above with the presence of one of the following conditions:
      • High blood pressure
      • High cholesterol
      • Sleep apnea
      • Heart disease

Study Duration

Participation in this research study will last approximately 18 months.

Compensation

Compensation of up to $670 is offered for completion of this study.
