Pennington Biomedical Celebrates Growth, Global Recognition at Annual Meeting
August 1, 2025 · Baton Rouge, LA
On Friday, Aug. 1, Pennington Biomedical Research Center brought together its faculty,
staff, and leadership for its annual Center-wide meeting, where Executive Director
Dr. John Kirwan delivered a forward-looking address underscoring the institution’s
momentum, resilience, and global leadership in metabolic research.
Dr. Kirwan’s remarks spotlighted a year defined by both challenge and opportunity, with the Center navigating a shifting federal funding environment while achieving major milestones across its research and outreach portfolio.
“This past year has been one of change, challenge, and unprecedented opportunity,” Kirwan said. “What’s remarkable is that we’re not only weathering these changes—we’re leading in areas that are now driving national and global attention.”
Pennington Biomedical’s stature as a national and international research leader was a central theme throughout the address. The Center launched a historic partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, activated a new Endocrinology and Diabetes Clinic, and joined NASA’s Spaceflight Research Program to study metabolism in space.
The Center also took center stage as the most represented institution on The Lancet Commission on Clinical Obesity, playing a leading role in the publication of the first global evidence-based definition of obesity as a chronic disease.
Pennington Biomedical’s commitment to translating research into real-world impact was on full display this year through the launch of the Greaux Healthy statewide initiative. Developed in partnership with the State of Louisiana, Greaux Healthy delivers evidence-based tools to improve children’s health through school and community engagement—culminating in outreach events across the state, including during Super Bowl week in New Orleans.
Governor Jeff Landry’s decision to sign key public health legislation at Pennington Biomedical underscored the Center’s rising influence in shaping policy rooted in science.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kirwan previewed a bold vision to expand Pennington Biomedical’s size, scope, and significance. He addressed challenges posed by potential federal funding reforms such as the FAIR model, while emphasizing strong state support and proactive financial planning.
The center’s internal culture also received attention, with Kirwan applauding this year’s Faculty Retreat and the onboarding of 72 new employees. He emphasized the importance of every role, from the bench to the front desk, in driving Pennington’s mission forward.
“Remember, whether you're publishing papers or processing invoices, running studies or running this campus—your work matters. We're not just doing science, we're leading it. From this special corner of Louisiana, we're changing lives and advancing health around the world. Together, we're building something extraordinary,” he said.
The meeting concluded with a spirited raffle and expressions of gratitude for the dedication of the Center’s workforce.
