College of American Pathologists Ensures Highest Standard of Care for All Laboratory Patients
Released: Monday, December 14, 2020

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to Pennington Biomedical Research Center’s Clinical Research Laboratory, based on results of a recent on-site inspection as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs.

The facility’s director, Jennifer Rood, Ph.D., DABCC, FACB, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. The Clinical Research Laboratory is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

“This is the highest score in the Clinical Research Laboratory’s 28-year history. Our latest CAP accreditation shows the Clinical Research Laboratory continues to meet the highest standards for accurate and timely test results,” Dr. Rood said.

“Over the last three decades, Pennington Biomedical has become a global leader in chronic disease research. It’s impossible to build a world-class research facility without a world-class clinical research laboratory and a staff of the same caliber,” said Executive Director John Kirwan, PhD. “This is fantastic news and a testament to the high level of excellence at Pennington Biomedical. Dr. Rood and her entire team deserve congratulations.”

The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

“Pennington Biomedical’s Clinical Research Laboratory demonstrates leadership, innovation, and a passionate commitment to standards of excellence while providing the highest quality services, ultimately for patients,” said Richard M. Scanlan, MD, FCAP, chair of the CAP’s Council on Accreditation. “The CAP congratulates Pennington Biomedical on its recent CAP Accreditation.”
