The Obesity Society (TOS) is the leading non-profit, voluntary association whose purpose is to develop, extend and disseminate knowledge in the field of obesity. Composed of approximately 2,200 researchers and clinicians, the Society conducts the largest scientific meeting on obesity each year and is involved in advocacy, education, and expanding public awareness. The Association as built a reputation as a source of credible, scientific-based information regarding obesity and works to enhance and strengthen the publications programs designed to improve the care of obese individuals. The journal Obesity is the leading, peer-reviewed journal in the world.

The Obesity Society is seeking a Managing Editor for the production of the journal assuring that issues of the journal are produced on time and within page budget. The incumbent oversees appropriate functioning of the online manuscript submission system and the peer-review process. The Managing Editor will report to the Executive Director of the Obesity Society but will be supervised daily by the Editor In Chief (EIC).

Duties include but are not limited to proofing all issues; managing page count allowance to ensure TOS does not exceed budget total; developing and monitoring journal budget including expenses such as page allowance and revenue such as royalties, subscriptions and advertising; assisting as needed with TOS budget regarding society publications; working cooperatively with the Editors-In-Chief of Obesity, assuring that the best interests of the journal and the society are considered; developing and updating training materials for Associate Editors of Obesity; working with publisher and EIC on holding training sessions for new Associate Editors; providing reports to the EIC and Council; working with publisher and EIC to keep the Guide to Authors up-to-date; working with publisher and EIC to develop reports for bi-monthly meetings with Associate Editors; responding to inquiries and requests of authors, reviewers, associate editors, and EIC; serves as escalation point when any of these parities are not satisfied; supervises peer-review process for the journal Obesity, including: working with Editorial Coordinator to make sure manuscripts are checked in properly and efficiently; helping check in manuscripts when the submission workload becomes unusually heavy. Facilitate operations with publisher, including: monitoring the progress of upcoming issues of Obesity; placing society ads each month; reviewing the readiness of accepted manuscripts for publication, exporting accepted manuscripts to the publisher and provide run list to publisher for each issue; coordinating with publisher and EIC other components of the issue such as Editorials, cover bullets, highlighted articles, etc. Monitoring effectiveness of the ScholarOne manuscript submission system for authors, reviewers and editorial staff; keep templates up-to-date to reflect changing needs and requirements; developing change requests for Manuscript Central (developer of ScholarOne) and supervise implementation of changes; provide advance issue article list with brief descriptions each month for distribution to media; serve as staff liaison to Committees and Sections as assigned (Pub Board & Associate Editors) including: scheduling of meetings/conference calls, disseminating materials to committee members, preparation of meeting minutes, sharing TOS policies and managing expectations and workflow; develop and distribute an RFP to publisher candidates near the end of each publishing contract; manage the RFP process to lead to the selection of the best publisher for the journal; mange the EIC search process near the end of an EIC's term; maintaining spreadsheet to monitor potential review topics submitted by authors; supervisor student workers who will assist in the day-to-day task on-site at the managing Editor's office; attend the annual meeting of The Obesity Society to assist with meeting execution; and participate by telephone in staff meetings of The Obesity Society when requested.
Qualifications:
BA/BS degree and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in publishing, preferably with peer-reviewed medical journal. A Master's Degree is preferred. Familiarity with web-based manuscript submissions and review systems is highly desirable. Applications will be accepted until suitable candidate is found.
