FREEDOM Study

Study Type

Diabetes/Prevention

Study Purpose

When diet and exercise are not enough to lower blood sugar, doctors usually first prescribe a drug such as metformin. However, many patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes need a second or even third blood-sugar lowering drug to maintain a desirable blood sugar level.

The FREEDOM research study will assess the effectiveness of a new way to deliver diabetes medication, when combined with metformin, for the potential management of type 2 diabetes. Researchers will also evaluate how well the study drug works when compared to other diabetes management medications and how well the study drug reduces weight in patients with type 2 diabetes.

About the Study

Researchers will assess if the investigational drug can help to lower hemoglobin A1C, a test that measures how well blood sugar is controlled over time.

The study consists of 10 total visits to the Pennington Biomedical outpatient clinic. These visits will take place over a period of approximately 1 year and 6 months.
