Doc's DASH 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run to Feature Healthy Fun for Families
Released: Wednesday, July 09, 2014

BATON ROUGE, LA – On Saturday, September 27, 2014 LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center will host  a community 5K and 1-mile fun run and family event for all ages - "Doc's DASH."

"This is a health and wellness event for the greater Baton Rouge community," said William T. Cefalu, MD, executive director of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.  "Thanks to Doc Pennington's gift in the 1980's, Baton Rouge and Pennington Biomedical are forever intertwined with the health of our community.  Doc's DASH and the events planned alongside it will provide an interactive, personalized health experience featuring some of the great research underway at Pennington Biomedical."

Doc's DASH is the inaugural run in what will become an annual event to benefit Pennington Biomedical.

Why the name "Doc's DASH"?  In the early 1980's, C.B. "Doc" Pennington and his wife Irene bestowed upon LSU a $125 million gift to create "the biggest and best nutrition research center in the country." Their gift created a stunning 234-acre campus in Baton Rouge housing 688,000 square-feet of state-of-the-art laboratories, clinics, conference facilities and office space.  Doc's vision has been realized.  Today, Pennington Biomedical has become one of the foremost academic nutritional research institutions in the world.  The generosity of Doc and Mrs. Irene has enabled scientific discoveries that have changed the way America eats, exercises and ages; and has advanced treatments for diseases from diabetes and dementia to obesity.  "DASH" is a hat tip to one such groundbreaking Pennington Biomedical discovery – the DASH Diet, ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the #1 healthy diet in America for the past four years.

Recognizing the continued support of the Pennington family, and in honor of Doc and Mrs. Irene, their granddaughter, Paula de la Bretonne, will serve as the inaugural race ambassador. "I hope that everyone will join us for this fantastic event and run Doc's DASH with us in memory of Doc and Mrs. Irene and the incredible impact of their generosity on our community," said Melissa Lupo, race director and wellness coordinator at Pennington Biomedical.
