The Inpatient Research Nurse will administer direct nursing care while following nursing procedures and institutional protocols. The Inpatient Research Nurse will also provide clinical oversight, education, and direct intervention to clients in specified Clinical Trial studies as defined by study protocols. - Function within the scope of practice as outlined by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing - Maintains standards precautions in the provision of care for all activities. - Accurately follows strict, technical instructions for each research study as describe in the study protocol. Any deviations are reported promptly to the appropriate authority. - Collects and verifies physiological and psychological data from subjects, charts, files and other departments. Accurately and completely documents all data collection and activities according to Standards of Procedures (SOP) and Methods of Procedure (MOP) guidelines. - Develops skills in data collection and reporting by utilizing various formats i.e. spreadsheets, computer etc. - Initiates and maintains intravenous lines, performs venipuncture and blood collection, processes samples and other nursing procedures according to SOP's and MOP's guidelines. - Administers oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, sublingual, rectal, topical and intranasal medications in accordance with medication administration guidelines and specialized study protocols. - Assists with procedures, admits participants, discharges participants, and monitors metabolic chambers. - Provides education and information to study participants. - Assists in day to day operations of the unit. - Helps keep equipment in good working order, calibrates equipment per protocol, and helps with general housekeeping. - Participates in orientation and in-service training for new employees and students. - Assists in reviewing, revising and updating policies and procedures. - Works effectively with others and assists other staff members without prompting. - Assists in the outpatient clinic as requested ; provides research coordinator duties as required. - Perform other duties and accept additional responsibilities as assigned.
Education: - Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred. - Current license as a Registered Nurse to practice in the state of Louisiana required. - Current CPR certification or willingness to complete course after hiring. Experience: - All least five years of experience as a Registered Nurse. - At least two years of experience in clinical trials to include performance of basic research assessments such as informed consent, anthropometric measures, and source documentation preferred. - At least one year experience in an academic setting preferred. Skills: - Strong verbal and written communication skills. - Ability to effectively work with clients in a non-judgmental approach and to build rapport and trust. - Motivational interviewing skills preferred. - Willingness to teach; ability to translate complex scientific information into everyday language. - Excellent organizational skills. - Detail oriented with the ability to effectively multi-task. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications and the ability to learn and utilize new computer programs/software quickly and accurately. - Ability to efficiently work and interact with personnel at all levels within the organization.
