To conduct its responsibility effectively, Pennington Biomedical Research Center maintains an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review human subject’s research protocols. The IRB is an autonomous administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects recruited to participate in human subjects research activities conducted at Pennington Biomedical.

SMART IRB and IRB Reliance Exchange (IREx)



SMART IRB is a platform designed to ease common challenges associated with initiating multisite research and to provide a roadmap for institutions to implement the NIH Single IRB Review policy (effective date: January 25, 2018).


IRB Reliance Exchange (IREx) is another tool used to facilitate the single IRB review process that is distinct from, but can be used with, the SMART IRB agreement.
