Study Purpose

During the transition through and after menopause, women can experience a wide range of symptoms. A hot flash is a common symptom of menopause where a woman experiences a sudden feeling of heat.


The FLAME research study will test if a small portable device, used to measure the temperature and humidity of the skin, can detect the presence and the strength of hot flashes in women. 

About the Study

Once enrolled in the study, participants will undergo 4 study visits, including 3 brief study visits at Pennington Biomedical lasting approximately 15 minutes each plus 1 study visit at Louisiana State University’s School of Kinesiology lasting approximately 3 hours. 

Study Design

Number of Visits:

  • 2 screening visits
  • 4 study visits


  • Blood pressure, heart rate, etc.
  • Body measurements (height, weight, etc.)
  • Blood test
  • Pregnancy test
  • DXA scan (to measure bone, muscle and body fat)
  • Questionnaires and hot flash journaling
  • Hot flash stimulation

Study Qualifications

To qualify for this research study, participants should:

  • Be female
  • Be 45 – 60 years of age
  • Have a BMI between 18.5-40 calculate your BMI
  • Have equal to or more than 4 hot flashes per day

Study Duration

Participation in this research study will last approximately 5 weeks.


Compensation of up to $110 is offered for the completion of this study.
