Description:
The Pennington Biomedical Research Center invites applications and nominations for the position of Director, Comparative Biology Core and Attending Veterinarian. The position reports to the Institutional Official and Associate Executive Director for Basic Science. The Pennington Center is a modern research institution whose mission is to discover the triggers of chronic diseases through innovative research that improves human health across the lifespan. Approximately 400 physicians, scientists, and support personnel focus their research efforts on four key areas: obesity and type 2 diabetes, nutrition and chronic diseases, functional foods, and health and performance enhancement. The Center is situated on a 237-acre tract of land near the main campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. The Center houses 48 research laboratories, 19 core research service facilities, inpatient and outpatient clinics, a research kitchen, and an administrative area. The Center has been fully accredited by AAALAC, Int. since 1993. The Comparative Biology Core constitutes the research vivarium of the Pennington Center, and encompasses over 40,000 square feet of usable space. The Core space comprises over forty animal housing rooms including conventional, barrier, ABSL2, and quarantine housing. Support space includes six dedicated procedural laboratories, three surgery rooms, and a corridor dedicated to behavioral studies. The Transgenic Core and Animal Metabolism and Behavior Cores are housed within the Comparative Biology Core. The Core is staffed by an Associate Director, animal caretakers, and cage wash personnel. A dynamic individual is sought who will oversee the laboratory animal program in a manner that facilitates the continued growth and excellence of the Center.
Qualifications:
The ideal applicant should possess a DVM/VMD, with documented experience in the management (fiscal and administrative) of laboratory animal care programs. ACLAM Board certification is highly desirable. Although not required, applicants with an active research program compatible with the mission of the Center are desirable.
