Media Relations Manager/Writer
The Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a research campus of Louisiana State University, invites qualified applicants for the position of Media Relations Manager/Writer. This position reports to the Director of Communications and supports the Center's external and internal communications efforts in keeping with the brand and strategic initiatives. The Manager will use creativity, strong project management skills and his/her knowledge of traditional and non-traditional outlets to achieve objectives. The Manager will work with media, internal and external stakeholders, and subject matter experts to identify, craft and pitch stories that reach and interest target audiences to include potential and existing clients, industry partners, user groups and employees. This position requires extensive and versatile writing skills, a high level of professional maturity, and project coordination abilities. Essential Functions: Write and distribute news releases and media pitches to maximize awareness of the organization's brand and/or subject matter expertise in areas of target strategic focus. Work with the Director, Communications to develop and execute overall strategic media plans that strengthen opportunities for coverage and develop key relationships to support messaging and brand positioning strategies. Create public relations and media plans, strategy and tactics as they relate to support of specific center initiatives, business programs and organization events. Manage and strengthen all media contacts lists. In concert with the Director, Communications build and develop working relationships with media representatives to promote, highlight and build awareness of the center and center initiatives, activities and events. Manage external media coverage to support key messaging and brand positioning strategies. Work with the Director, Communications to create, drive and manage approvals for all news stories and press releases to ensure appropriate consensus and stakeholder agreement on messaging and distribution. Create content that increases media traffic through traditional and non-traditional outlets that drives interest in the center. Support the Director, Communications in the development of media messaging for organization leaders and as needed for interviews, requests and events/projects. Research and write briefing materials. Investigate and scope out media inquiries and opportunities for potential alignment in support of key messaging and/or brand strategies. Coordinate with subject matter experts and/or center representatives to fulfill inquiries as appropriate. Track, compile and distribute daily media coverage reports. Organize and keep updated center data, statistics, talking points, stock/promotional information and make information available throughout the organization. Establish and manage media monitoring programs and databases. Compile monthly metrics reports for news media coverage and stories. Craft and assemble media kits and collateral. Seek out and establish creative and effective communications channels. Support marketing and outreach efforts through the generation of creative ideas and concepts that reinforce key messaging efforts through traditional and non-traditional collateral and media. Establish and maintain relationships with subject matter experts within the center with the ability to quickly offer and coordinate proper organization spokespersons in support of inquiries. Compose and edit center literature and articles for internal and external use. Work with the Director, Communications in support of crisis situations and communications as they arise.
BS in public relations/communications or a related field 3 to 5 years' experience in media relations and writing Strong writing/journalistic skills, able to write in a variety of styles (including persuasive and editorial) necessary to adapt stories/messages to multiple audiences and media. Strong editing skills. Strong working knowledge of AP Style. Strategy oriented. Able to create, manage and schedule assignments based on priorities of assigned projects. Awareness of/experience with science and health communications. Able to understand complex concepts and subject matter comfortably; and translate those concepts to a variety of lay audiences. Able to organize people, tools, equipment and other resources and orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously to accomplish desired results. Energetic about challenges, self-motivated and able to focus on long term objectives amidst short term assignments and deadlines. Able to build constructive, effective and professional relationships, put others at ease and establish rapport; relate to all sorts of people inside and outside of the organization. Act with integrity that shows support for the center, its values, and employees. Calm under pressure.
