Description: |
The development of current concepts of nutritional
effects on health and disease though the use of cellular, molecular, genetic,
and epidemiological tools.

BIOL
4087 or BIOL 4094 or permission of the coordinator

| Instructors: |
This
course will be team-taught using the specific expertise of Pennington
Biomedical Research Center staff in each topic area. Dr. Carol Lammi-Keefe, School of Human Ecology, will be the instructor of record
for the course and will liaise with each topic coordinator to ensure
a uniformity of approach. The Division of Educational Programs at Pennington
will coordinate the course.

| Objectives: |
During and upon successful completion of the
course, students will be able to:
1. Describe current understanding of specific topics in the field of molecular
and clinical nutrition.
2.
Explore interactions between basic and clinical sciences in developing their
understanding of nutritional effects.
3.
Discuss how modern cellular and molecular techniques are used to identify mechanisms
of nutrient action.
4. Outline appropriate experimental approaches for the design of clinical research
studies.
5. Explain the role of gene/environment interactions in the maintenance of health
and the development of disease.
6. Discuss the effects of nutrition at different organizational levels from the
whole body through organs and cells to the genome.

| Assignments and Evaluation: |
- Each student will be assigned one to two readings and asked to present a power point presentation to the class on the reading.
- Each instructor will formulate an exam question that addresses key points of their lecture.
This question will be given to students in the form of a take home exam. These exams should be returned within two weeks of the assignment as an attachment to email addressed to CLammi-Keefe@agcenter.lsu.edu. Dr. Lammi-Keefe will make a clear distinction between work that must be your own and work that may be shared.

| Grading: |
- The take home exam will make up 40% of the grade;
- Class participation will make up 10% of the grade (1% for every question asked up to ten);
- Student presentations will make up 50% of the grade.
