Current Research:
My new projects link my clinical training as a physician and my graduate school experience in cell and molecular biology research to perform patient-oriented research. I am currently working on two studies. The first study (TAKE TIME) aims to determine changes in mitochondrial content and function in skeletal muscle of type 2 diabetes subjects treated with pioglitazone. In addition this study will determine changes in metabolic flexibility and insulin suppression of free fatty acids. The second study (ACTIV) aims to validate a paradigm for the evaluation of compounds and drugs that activate mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle. Family history positive and family history negative healthy young adult volunteers will be studied. The project will determine how short term aerobic exercise influences skeletal muscle mitochondrial content and function, metabolic flexibility, and insulin sensitivity.

Other Research Interests:
Adipose tissue biology, Human adult stem cells differentiation , Viral induced obesity
