Study Name Chromium II
Study Type Type 2 Diabetes
Study Purpose The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is recruiting Type 2 Diabetics for a 28-week diabetic research study.  We will be testing Chromium, a natural element, which may improve your body’s metabolism and help better manage your blood sugar levels.
Study Design

- 1 screening visit to determine eligibility

- 15 other clinic visits

- Two overnight (18-hour) stays

- Have insulin clamp test

- 2 muscle biopsies

- Two  overnight (24-hour) stays in the metabolic chamber

- 2 MRS scans

- 3 Food testing days

Study Qualifications

- Have Type 2 Diabetes

- Diabetes controlled with diet and/or one diabeted medication

- Overweight (BMI range: 25-40) calculate your BMI

- Some medications ok

Study Duration 28 weeks
Study Compensation Participants will be compensated $2000 at the study completion.

Study Name MODEL
Study Type Type 2 Diabetes weight loss
Study Purpose

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is enrolling volunteers for a 16 month weight loss study.  Participants will be placed on a low calorie diet then be given Byetta (or placebo) to determine if weight remains stable.

Study Design

- 26 clinic visits

- You will be on a low calorie diet for 10 weeks, or until you lose 7% of your body weight

THEN

- You will be placed on Byetts (or placebo) for 12 month

Study Qualifications

- Age: 30-70

- Have Type 2 Diabetes

- Overweight (BMI: 27-45) calculate your BMI

- Not on insulin

- Not taking Actos or Avandia

- Some medications are allowed

Study Duration 16 month
Study Compensation Participants will be compensated $625 at the end of the study

Study Name HART-D
Study Type Type 2 Diabetes
Study Purpose

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is recruiting volunteers with Type 2 Diabetes to participate in a resarch study.  The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of:

1) Cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise alone

2) Strength training exercises alone

3) A combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength exercises

4) Standard care

on blood sugar levels in people with Type II Diabetes.  

Study Design

- Orientation Visit

- 4 clinic visits

- 32 week exercise intervention

Weekly exercise sessions by trained staff at PBRC Fitness Center

- Monthly meetings with Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)

Study Qulaifications

- Have Type 2 Diabetes

- Age: 30-75

- Do not exercise regularly

Study Duration 9 months
Study Compensation Participants will be compensated $200 at the end of the study.

- Oral diabeted medications ok

- Some medications allowed

Study Duration 14 months

- Overweight (BMI: 27-45) calculate your BMI

Study Duration 13 months

Study Purpose The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is recruiting volunteers for a study to test the effect of Exubera (inhaled insulin) compared to Lantus on blood sugar control in people with Type 2 Diabetes.

- 2 screening visit

- 7 clinic visits

 
Study Qualifications

- Age: 30-75 years

- Have Type 2 Diabetes

- Must be on at least one oral diabetes medication

- Not on insulin

Study Duration 6 months
Study Compensation Participants will be compensated up to $525

Study Purpose

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is recruiting volunteers to study the differences in body fat in men and women.

Study Design

- 1 screening visit to determine eligibility

- 3 clinic visits

- 2 outpatient visits

- 1 overnight inpatient stay

Study Qualifications

- Non-smokers

- No medications allowed

- Must fit into one of the following groups:

- With Type 2 Diabetes

- Overweight (BMI: 27-35) calculate your BMI

- Age: 40-60

- Without Type 2 Diabetes

- Have no chronic diseases

- Age: 18-35

- Overweight (BMI: 27-35) calculate your BMI

- Lean (BMI >25) calculate your BMI African American females

Study Duration 2 weeks
Study Compensation Participants will be compensated $500 at the study completion.
